Gus Udo
The author of personal memoirs, essays, and tales that are a part of contemporary American, British, and Nigerian social history. His books contribute to inclusive narratives and voices that have gone unheard for too long. Stories that now have space to be told.
His first book, Oyibos: Memoirs of Culture Shock, explored his journey to England and America. His family escaped an impending civil war in Nigeria, and he grew up in London in the late-1960s and 1970s. He attended Harvard College and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Then he spent a stint on Wall Street.
His second book is: The Plimsoll Line: Collected Essays and Tales of Love and Other Subjects.
His third book, Luck and Happenstance: A Windrush Life, turns his author's lenses to luck and happenstance in the context of the Windrush Scandal. A British immigration scandal that was reported in the UK press in April 2018. The scandal sent shockwaves through the UK government’s Cabinet and forced the Home Secretary to resign. The author tells his own Windrush experience through a collection of essays and tales about his life, which was irreversibly altered by the scandal.
Gus has also written the first in a series of Afrofuturist children's books, Algernon & Ethelbert: #1 Trek to an Ancient Kingdom which is available in audio format on SoundCloud. It is a tale about siblings, Algernon and Ethelbert, who travel back in time on an adventure to recover sixteen looted bronze heads of rulers from the Udo Kingdom, a onetime rival of the ancient Benin Kingdom which is famed for the Benin Bronzes. The story whisks the two children away on a fantastic journey through time and space, visiting exotic locations like the lost Udo Kingdom and the futuristic Europa.
His new book, Tilted: Billion Dollar Blind Spot—Silicon Valley, Venture Capital, and the Greensill Caper, delves into the author's recent professional experiences, uncovering the detrimental effects of "Deception," "Betrayal," and "Greed," within the high-stakes realm of venture capital. It sheds light on how pattern-matching practices can lead to the exclusion of deserving investments, both through oversight and deliberate action, revealing the significant costs incurred by individuals like you and me.
